Features of Embroidery on Denim Fabric

Machine embroidery can be performed on both fabric pieces and finished garments. Working with ready-made clothing often raises more questions since seam allowances consist of many layers, and not every machine can handle this task. However, denim, like other dense fabrics, is perfect for machine and other types of embroidery.

Expert Tips for Embroidery on Denim

By applying tips from experienced professionals and tutorials found online, you can easily decorate denim fabric. Here are some key recommendations:

  • Opt for designs with a light fill.
  • Use embroidery needles marked with "Jeans."
  • The presser foot should be positioned higher than the seam height at the intersection point.
  • Set the machine's speed to a minimum.
  • Avoid embroidering on seams thicker than 3 mm.
  • Ensure the embroidery area fits into the hoop without excessive tension or sagging.
  • For a quality result, choose and purchase an embroidery stabilizer.
  • Cut the non-adhesive stabilizer larger than the hoop size and attach it to the fabric's reverse side using temporary spray adhesive.
  • After completing the work, trim the stabilizer along the design contour.
  • Classic denim with a density of 400-500 g/m² can be embroidered without a stabilizer.
  • Lightweight fabric with a density of 135-200 g/m² requires additional stabilization.
  • For Richelieu embroidery, it’s best to use water-soluble interfacing.

Other Types of Denim Clothing Decoration

Apart from machine or hand satin stitch embroidery, you can use other types of embellishments on denim clothing:

  • Hand Cross-Stitch Embroidery: Use a piece of canvas placed on top of the denim fabric and secured with stitches for convenience.
  • Sequin Embroidery: This can be done directly on the garment or on a separate piece of fabric, then sewn onto the desired area.
  • Beaded Embroidery: Start with a small number of colors, applying a design with a water-soluble marker or by attaching a paper stencil.

You can also decorate denim clothing with appliqués, studs, rivets, lace, and other elements. Just remember to handle your denim clothing with care afterward. Wash on a delicate cycle at 30°C and use detergent designed for colored fabrics.
